🌎Global Gathering 🌍 There’s no community quite li 🌎Global Gathering 🌍 There’s no community quite like AJLA’s, and families, students and faculty all came out for this weekend’s International Festival. This event is now in its third year, and it’s truly something that everyone across the school looks forward to. Families brought food to share with one another that represented generations-old recipes and cultures from around the world. Children collected stickers in their very own “passports” and made crafts like bracelets to take home. Most excitingly, everyone was treated to performances by musicians and dancers across a great many cultures. This year we were lucky enough to welcome dancers representing Paraguay and Ireland (@pajarocampana.ct and @lenihanagram ) as well as returning musician favorite, Gamaliel Moses (@gammymoses ). We continue to be grateful for this special mix of people in this special place. ✨ #hoperising
🍁 Pumpkin JOY! 🍁⁠ ⁠ The #AJLAfirstgrade students h 🍁 Pumpkin JOY! 🍁⁠ ⁠ The #AJLAfirstgrade students had a chance to dig into some huge pumpkins last week in a lesson that combined math and their thematic study. ⁠ ⁠ This activity involved counting hundreds of seeds, sensory play with the pumpkin "guts", hands-on work with a vegetable they've been learning all about, and a whole lot of fun!⁠ ⁠ First graders were especially excited to have so many parent volunteers here for the fun event, and we love opportunities to bring learning to LIFE!⁠ ⁠ #hoperising⁠
🌱 Growing and Thriving 🌱⁠ ⁠ The AJLA third grade t 🌱 Growing and Thriving 🌱⁠ ⁠ The AJLA third grade teachers started with a question: "What does this plant need to grow and thrive?" Exciting botanical research and deep lessons on annotating non-fiction texts ensued, but true-to-form, our teachers had a bigger plan. As their students learned about consistent watering, just-right light conditions, and more, the third grade teachers invited students to make the connection between themselves and these potted plants. "What is it that you want to feel in this classroom? What do we need to do as a community to make sure that everyone feels that way?"- It turns out there's more similarities than not:⁠ ⁠ 💧 Consistent watering= students want to BUILD COMMUNITY so they have promised to check in on each other and lift each other up⁠ ⁠ ☀️ Just-right light= students want to FEEL INCLUDED so they have promised to invite everyone to play⁠ ⁠ 🥀 Adjusting things if the plant wilts= students want to LEARN RESILIENCE so they have promised to keep trying even when things are hard⁠ ⁠ These promises that students make to one another as a classroom community are part of our Class Charters. These are documents that students across our school write and then hold themselves accountable to all year long. The third graders researched plants, wrote their charters, and then ended their hard work by adopting a potted plant of their own to care for throughout the year. We are sure that they will show consistent and loving care to each of their plants just as they will show those same traits towards one another. This may be one of the most important lessons we can teach.⁠ ⁠ #hoperising #buildingcommunity⁠
🏗️ Construction Zone 🏗️ Last year, Middle School 🏗️ Construction Zone 🏗️ Last year, Middle School STEAM students started with a simple question: How can we improve our outdoor play space? They began by studying the play yard itself. Students measured the space and built scaled models so they could better understand its layout, how much room they had to work with, and where changes might be possible. They also talked with students and teachers across the school about how the play yard was being used and what could work better. Along the way, two students noticed a very real problem, the bikes and tricycles did not have a good place to be stored. They started sketching ideas, testing different possibilities, taking measurements, building models, and eventually creating blueprints for a solution. This year, a parent (David of @davidhb203 ) helped them take the next step and actually build what they had designed. He guided them through the construction process, working alongside them as they measured, built and problem solved their way from a plan on paper to a finished structure that is useful and already beloved!
