Last week AJLA received the "Connect Award" from Horizons at Sacred Heart University at their annual benefit. The Connect Award celebrates a leader whose work creates powerful pathways to connection - linking youth, educators and communities. AJLA was recognized for our efforts to center community, advance educational equality and create meaningful connection across Bridgeport and beyond.⁠

We are grateful to the @horizonsshu organization for this honor, and the greatest gift of all is getting to serve the incredible community we have cultivated here at AJLA and in the greater Bridgeport community.⁠

🏔️ Ain't No Mountain High Enough 🏔️⁠

Some of our #AJLAsixthgrade students recently got to take a magical weekend trip to Bear Mountain with two of our dedicated teachers. This group set a goal to climb Connecticut's tallest peak, and they were determined to succeed. ⁠
⁠
Despite challenges along the way, the whole group made it to the summit, and they built stronger muscles and forged stronger bonds throughout the hike. 💪 💚 AJLA's five pillars are integrity, resilience, wonder, compassion, and initiative, and all were truly on display that day!⁠

Forever grateful to the #AJLAteachers who made this special trip a reality and to the #AJLAfamilies who embarked on this journey together with their children!⁠

Today we welcomed AJLA parents and friends to school for our fourth "Classroom Connections and Coffee" fall event of the year. We are thrilled that so many families could attend these throughout the last several weeks! Classrooms have been abuzz as adults learned new games that their students confidently taught them, students paired with family members for challenges that tested grit and grew resilience, and parents took part in Morning Meetings in classrooms across the school.⁠
⁠
At AJLA, we know that children learn best when significant adults in their lives work together to encourage and support them. We are grateful for an incredible community of families that partner with our school to make a lasting difference in the lives of these young students.

⛵️ Come Sail Away with Me ⛵️⁠

In collaboration with @soundwaters the #AJLAsecondgrade classes explored the Long Island Sound on a massive schooner in a recent field trip connected to their year-long essential question "How does water impact life?"⁠
⁠
Our excited students learned about ecology and biology while sailing on the water. They investigated how plants and animals survive daily environmental changes and examined macro and microscopic organisms living in brackish water. Perhaps most exciting was seeing all of the animals they pulled up in their net! 🦞 🐟 🦀⁠
⁠
Field trips like this make for memories that last a lifetime, and we are so grateful for partners like @soundwaters in bringing learning beyond the four walls of our classrooms for our #AJLAstudents⁠
