We help students develop to their fullest potential and achieve long-lasting success after graduation.

Our Mission

Adam J. Lewis Academy is a co-educational PreK-Grade 8 independent school serving children and families in Bridgeport, CT. The Academy attracts families who believe in the power of education to inspire children from all backgrounds to achieve their promise and embody the school’s motto, Hope Rising.

Through a program of rigorous academics, rich experiential and creative learning, and deep family engagement, AJLA nurtures the potential within each child—preparing students for a lifetime of intellectual exploration, personal growth, and moral citizenship. Children graduate from the Academy as leaders, empowered with the knowledge, skills, character, and confidence to succeed.

OUR BELIEFS

AJLA creates a high-quality educational experience for its students through its thoughtful implementation of some of the most compelling thinking in the field of child development:

A deep understanding of child development and the uniqueness of each child guides the entire educational program.

Children are capable of constructing their own learning – as they interact with the world around them, they continually add new knowledge, build upon existing knowledge, and adapt previously held ideas to accommodate new information.

Children must have a role in directing their learning – they do not all learn in the same way or at the same pace.

The development of character and self-esteem – leading to heightened self-awareness and assertive self-advocacy – is a significant component of student success.

Active interaction with relevant materials – “hands-on” learning – is essential to the acquisition and retention of both content and skills.

Collaboration is key – the development of relationships plays an important role not only in students’ construction of knowledge, but also in the promotion of individual and community health.

Teachers are active partners, nurturers, and facilitators to children and help them explore their interests.

The educational environment is its own “teacher” and must be enriching and supportive.

Parent participation is vital to a child’s sustained growth, development, and success.
